Q: As a self-insured employer, can we benchmark our workers' compensation experience against insured and other self-insured?
A: Yes. There are ways to analyze your data and compare it against similar employers. If you have any questions, please contact Colin Brigham, CIH, CSP, CPE, CPEA.
Q: Can workers' compensation costs be reduced enough to offset the costs associated with increased safety management?
A: Absolutely! Studies have shown that for every dollar invested in safety management there is a $4.00 to $10.00 reduction in workers' compensation and associated safety expenses. Please contact Colin Brigham, CIH, CSP, CPE, CPEA, and he will introduce you to our COSTC.A.R.E. Program.
Q: Does 1Source have data management software to store survey and sampling data along with reports to help us with our recordkeeping requirements under OSHA?
A: Yes, 1Source has developed SMARTouch data management software for asbestos and lead surveys, industrial hygiene sampling surveys, indoor air quality and office ergonomics. SMARTouch allows a client to store all the data and reports in one location for easy access.
Q: How do I determine what safety and health standards, regulations and guidelines apply to me?
A: We can help you based upon your company’s nature of operations, exposures, regulatory and advisory bodies. For example, healthcare employers may operate in different Environments of Care. For compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) there are both general and environment of care specific standards. Healthcare employers are subject to Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) standards, may also be subject to OSHA standards and many other
regulatory bodies standards. For more details contact Colin J. Brigham, CIH, CSP, CPE, CPEA, CSPHP.
Q: I have used other consultants for industrial hygiene surveys and I was not satisfied with their reports. How can I be assured that 1Source Safety and Health will provide a report that meets my expectations?
A: First, we will be happy to provide you with references for similar projects or surveys. Secondly, we will ask you for your specific report requirements; and finally, we review the results and recommendations with you prior to issuing a draft report for your review prior to finalization.
Q: If audiometric testing shows an employees hearing loss to be 25 or more decibels at 2000, 3000 and 4,000 hertz in one or both ears is it considered OSHA recordable?
A: Not always. Employers can retest within 30 days. If the employer plans to retest, the case must be recorded within 7 days following the retest. If an audiologist, otolaryngologist, or physician determines the hearing loss is not work-related or significantly aggravated by occupational noise, the case is not considered work-related.
Q: Since the OSHA Ergonomics Standard 29CFR 1910.900 has been rescinded, what analytical tools will OSHA accept to perform ergonomic assessments?
A: Since there is no OSHA Ergonomics Standard, OSHA will accept any generally accepted
tool that results in the prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD). We have helped develop ergonomic risk assessment toolkits you may use to determine the right tool. We have also helped to develop and use the tools themselves. Please contact Colin Brigham, CIH, CSP, CPE, CPEA, CSPHP email to discuss the various tools available for use.
Q: We are striving for safety and health excellence. How do I know which is the right occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) for us to benchmark against?
A: There are a number of systems out there including the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, and others. We can help you to determine where you are, where you want to be, and the correct benchmarks to get you there. For more details contact Colin J. Brigham, CIH, CSP, CPE, CPEA, CSPHP.
